Chella Man is an artist who identifies as Deaf, genderqueer, trans-masculine, Chinese, and Jewish. Chella found he didn’t have role models to look up to, so he decided to be his own representation. This motto “Be your own representation” would become a pillar of his teachings. The intersections of his identity have created a unique perspective. Before learning the language to articulate his experiences, art was a loophole. Creating visuals enabled Chella Man to express himself when lacking the proper language. Art became his catharsis in the face of systemic oppression.
He has now given talks internationally on the intersections of art, disability, queerness, race, and healing. Additionally, he published his first book, Continuum, with Penguin, launched a clothing line in collaboration with Opening Ceremony, signed on as a columnist for Condé Naste’s first queer publication, signed as the first Deaf and trans-masculine model with IMG Models, and was casted as a superhero within Warner Brother’s DC Universe, Titan’s. He hopes to continue pushing the boundaries of what it means to be accessible, inclusive, and equal in this world.
